The role of the Board

The SFRS Board consists of a Chair and up to 14 members appointed by Scottish Ministers.

Members ensures the effective governance and financial management of the Service. Their key focus is public service delivery and reform for the benefit of improving the safety and wellbeing of the people of Scotland.

The responsibilities of board members include:

  • providing challenge, support, strategic leadership and direction
  • securing best value and holding the Chief Officer to account for securing best value for the Service
  • ensuring a high standard of governance and conduct
  • having responsibility for appointing the Chief Officer and other senior officers.

Board meetings

Formal board meetings take place six or seven times a year at approximate two month intervals. These give Board members the opportunity to scrutinise and approve key strategic decisions.

Members of the public can observe virtual board and committee public meetings. Private and confidential items are dealt with privately, in line with the standing orders for the meetings of the Board and its committees.

Agendas and meeting papers are published ahead of meetings. Once approved by members, full meeting minutes are also published.
