Firefighters worked for almost eight hours overnight to tackle a blaze at a derelict building.

They were alerted at 10.31pm to the fire at Inverkip Road, Greenock on Tuesday, 29 March.

It was spotted by a passing member of the public who reported seeing smoke and flames.

Crews, who reached the scene within five minutes, were confronted with the well-developed fire in the vacant two-storey property.

They immediately turned two water jets onto the flames as an aerial platform was drafted in to douse them from above.

Another team of firefighters kitted out in breathing apparatus then entered the building armed with a water jet to further fight the fire.

A cordon was set up by police just before 11pm as firefighters forced entry to a main stairway to investigate how far it had spread.

Scottish Gas and Scottish Power were alerted.

At the height of the incident, there were five fire engines from Greenock, Gourock and Port Glasgow in attendance.

The Environmental Protection Unit from Hamilton, Lanarkshire was also sent as a precautionary measure due to the possible presence of asbestos.

The last pockets of fire were being targeted by 2.33am on Wednesday, 30 March.

Crews left the scene at 6.14am and handed over the premises to building control.
