Crew Commander speaks out about experience of being openly queer in the fire service
During LGBTQ+ History Month, Scottish Fire and Rescue Service staff are sharing their lived experiences to advocate for equality and combat discrimination.

Crew Commander Frances McQuade has been a firefighter for more than six years and currently serves at Motherwell Community Fire Station.
Over the past year, Fran has embraced two significant new roles — becoming a Crew Commander and a mum — both of which bring their unique challenges and rewards.
Through it all, her passion for the job has remained strong, and she values the many open and respectful conversations she has had with colleagues about LGBTQ+ issues.
Frances – who uses she/her pronouns – says her experience as an openly queer firefighter in the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) has been largely positive. But she’s aware that this isn’t the case for everyone.
Some LGBTQ+ colleagues don’t feel comfortable being their full selves at work, and while coming out is a deeply personal choice, she wants everyone to feel safe enough to do so if they wish.
Creating a truly inclusive workplace benefits everyone, not just minority employees.

Frances, also known as Fran, said: “The Service has been inclusive and supportive of me and so have my colleagues.
“That’s why allies are so important. Not just those who quietly support, but those who actively advocate, even when the LGBTQ+ community isn’t in the room.”
For anyone in the LGBTQ+ community struggling at work, finding people with shared experiences can be incredibly validating.
Fran is part of the SFRS LGBTQ+ Network and the representative of the West of Scotland area for the Fire Brigade Union LGBTQ+ Section. Both networks are great spaces to connect and find support.
The 34-year-old said: “I am proud to have the platform at the fire service to discuss diversity and inclusion.
“Creating a truly inclusive workplace benefits everyone, not just minority employees.”
