Firefighters Memorial Day
Firefighters Memorial Day is dedicated to honouring firefighters who have lost their lives in the line of duty.
At 12 noon on Saturday 4 May our crews will parade at stations across Scotland, participating in a minute’s silence to mark the occasion.
On this day, we remember the bravery and sacrifice of our fallen colleagues, including firefighter Barry Martin, who lost his life responding to a fire in Edinburgh in January 2023. This year also marks the 15th anniversary of the death of Firefighter Ewan Williamson.
As we remember all firefighters who have given their lives, we also recognise the bravery and commitment of our retired and current firefighters, who continue to put their lives on the line every day to protect the people of Scotland.
Scottish Fire and Rescue Service Chief Officer Ross Haggart said: "Firefighters Memorial Day is a time for us to come together as a service to honour and remember the selflessness and courage of firefighters.
“Today is a reminder of the risks our crews take every day to protect the people of Scotland. I am proud to pay tribute to those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice to protect others.
“This year is particularly poignant for us given the tragic passing of Firefighter Barry Martin last year. This year also marks the 15th anniversary of the passing of Firefighter Ewan Williamson.
“Let us take a moment to reflect and express our gratitude for the bravery and dedication of our current firefighters and those we have sadly lost.”
Victims and Community Safety Minister Siobhian Brown said: “Firefighters' Memorial Day is an opportunity to remember the sacrifice of firefighters who have lost their lives protecting others, and to thank past and serving officers for their bravery and dedication to keeping communities safe.”
