Firefighters to put new training strategy into practice
Scottish Fire and Rescue Service launches five-year strategy to enhance firefighter training excellence
A new five-year training strategy has been implemented which sets out how the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service intends to deliver high quality training for firefighters.
Throughout their career, firefighters undertake continuous training to maintain operational competence as they work to keep communities safe in the event of fires, road traffic collisions, extreme weather events and many other incident types.
Deputy Assistant Chief Officer Craig McGoldrick is head of the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service’s (SFRS) Training Function.
He said: "Our firefighters are trained to ensure they have the suitable skills and knowledge to respond to incidents and protect the communities of Scotland.
“Maintaining operational competence through training is vital and we are committed to the development and continuous improvement of our staff.
“Over the next few years, the strategy will ensure that training is delivered in the most efficient and effective way. Our staff will see investment in training sites and equipment to ensure they have access to the best facilities available to them.”
Minister for Victims and Community Safety, Siobhian Brown MSP, attended the National Training Centre in Cambuslang to see a number of courses taking place.
The Minister said: “Firefighters play a key role job in keeping communities safe and it is vital that they have training, skills and knowledge to deal with a wide range of emergency situations.
“At the National Training Centre I saw trainee firefighters being put through their paces so they are equipped to face all the challenges that the job might throw at them – from flood risks to high-intensity blazes and search and rescue operations.
“I look forward to continuing to work with SFRS as their five-year training strategy progresses.”
Through the implementation of this strategy, SFRS will continue to deliver a blended learning approach, including realistic practical based exercises along with online modules, to ensure firefighters complete the requirements of the Training for Operational Competence framework.
