Statement Update - Fire at recycling centre, Byrehill Place, Kilwinning

"Two fire appliances are in attendance and work remains ongoing to gain full and safe access to the site to extinguish the fire.

"The fire is under control, and dampening down efforts are continuing.

"We continue to work alongside partners to minimise the disruption to the local community, and bring this incident to a safe conclusion."

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service is reassuring residents in the Byrehill area of Kilwinning following an ongoing fire at a recycling centre, as increased activity is anticipated this afternoon to allow further access to the site.

SFRS is urging residents to not be alarmed if they notice an increase in smoke plumage coming from the site as works commence from 2pm on Wednesday, 10 April.

Area Commander Ian McMeekin, Local Senior Officer for East, North and South Ayrshire said: “Currently, the smoke plume has reduced, and the fire is under control.

“The increased activity from 2pm onwards will allow fire crew and partners to gain access to the site to bring the incident to a conclusion.

“Residents may notice an increase in activity while we work to gain access to the site.  Do not be alarmed if you see an increase in smoke. The fire within the site will remain under control as we work to bring the incident to a conclusion.

“We urge residents to remain at home with windows and doors shut. If travelling through smoke, motorists should keep windows closed, turn off air conditioning and keep their air vents closed.

“We continue to work with the recycling centre and partner agencies to minimise the disruption to the local community and will continue to provide updates.”

Two appliances and one height vehicle currently remain at the scene.

At its height, around 40 firefighters were mobilised to the scene after the alarm was raised just after 10pm on Monday, April 8 to reports of a fire on Byrehill Place, Kilwinning.

Update: Tuesday, April 9, 2024 6.45pm

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service urges residents in the surrounding area to remain at home with windows and doors shut following a fire at a battery recycling centre in Kilwinning, North Ayrshire.

Three appliances and one height vehicle remain at the scene as crews work to extinguish the fire. There are no reported casualties.

At its height, around 40 firefighters were mobilised to the scene after the alarm was raised just after 10pm on Monday, April 8 to reports of a fire on Byrehill Place, Kilwinning.

Residents are advised to stay at home and keep windows and doors closed.

Area Commander Jim Quinn said: “We continue to work with the recycling centre and partner agencies to minimise the disruption to the local community and will continue to provide updates.

“While smoke continues to be visible, we would ask that residents remain at home, and keep windows and doors closed as a precaution. 

“If travelling through smoke, motorists should keep windows closed, turn off air conditioning and keep their air vents closed.”
