Trainee firefighters take on seven-mile charity walk in full kit
Fourty one trainee firefighters and instructors will start a seven-mile charity walk on Saturday, 7 June.
A group of trainee firefighters will be marking the end of their training in a remarkable way – by taking part in a seven-mile charity walk.
The walk, taking place on Saturday, 7 June, will start from the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service’s National Training Centre in Cambuslang, South Lanarkshire, ending at Glasgow Green.
Ahead of their official graduation ceremony next Friday, the group of 41 crews will trek the distance along the River Clyde while wearing full firefighting kit and breathing apparatus weighing approximately 40 kilograms.
It’s a tough walk, but it’s for a great cause that supports so many of our colleagues.
The challenge not only celebrates the completion of their intensive training course but also aims to raise vital funds and awareness for the Fire Fighters Charity, which provides physical, mental, and social support to serving and retired fire and rescue personnel across the country.
Trainee Firefighter Laura Frizzel is taking part in the challenge. She said: “We wanted to end our training on a high and give something back to the firefighting community.
“It’s a tough walk, but it’s for a great cause that supports so many of our colleagues.”
The group will be joined by six firefighter instructors: Watch Commander Stephen Burns, Watch Commander Martin O’Connor, Watch Commander Ian Moir, Watch Commander Michael McGarry, Watch Commander Greig McCulloch, and Watch Commander Grant McRavey.
