Update on fire in derelict hotel in South Ayrshire
Firefighters remain at the scene of a major fire which broke out at the Station Hotel in Ayr on Monday evening.
Firefighters remain at the scene of a major fire which broke out at the Station Hotel in Ayr on Monday evening.
The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) was called to a fire at the Station Hotel at 5.37pm on Monday 25 September.
At its height, SFRS mobilised fifteen appliances to the scene, where crews were met with a well-developed fire in a large derelict building.
One fire appliance remains at the scene today (Wednesday, 27 September).
Area Commander Ian McMeekin is the Local Senior Officer for East, North and South Ayrshire. He said: "Firefighters are currently dampening down at the scene as they work to extinguish small pockets of fire.
"This is being made challenging due to the internal condition of the building, which is restricting access."
LSO McMeekin added: “As a national service, our highly trained Operations Control staff have the flexibility to mobilise the most appropriate fire appliance to any incident.
“A number of high reach appliances have been mobilised to this incident, including the one based in Kilmarnock, which developed a technical fault and was replaced.
“High reach vehicles are national assets which can be strategically deployed to incidents across the country.
"As this was a derelict building with no life risk, and given the developed fire, the deployment of the high reach appliance was not time critical and did not impact the outcome of the incident."
As part of our ongoing response to this incident, we will continue to monitor the weather warning in place across Scotland.
Crews are likely to remain on scene throughout today and tomorrow.
