Women in the Fire Service

Our SFRS Headquarters was buzzing with energy and pride as we held our first Women in the Fire Service event at our National Headquarters in Cambuslang on 28 and 29 September, 2024.

More than 100 people came together over two days to share stories, strengthen connections, discuss common challenges and celebrate women across the Service.

The attendees included firefighters both operational and from our control rooms, as well as support staff. We were also delighted to host attendees from other fire and rescue services who travelled from Cumbria, Merseyside, Manchester, South Yorkshire and Cleveland.

Participants took part in a variety of workshops, including hands-on sessions at our National Training Centre where they got the chance to put out building fires, do home fire safety visits and rescue casualties in a simulated road traffic collision. There were also interactive Q&A panel sessions on key issues, as well as presentations from the Fire Brigades Union (FBU) Women’s Section.

The event was a huge success and we've received lots of positive feedback. Here's what some people have said.

What a fabulous event and what an inspiring group of women. I’ve had a fab time and can’t wait for the next one!
Absolutely brilliant weekend!! Thank you so much! Looking forward to the next one already!

We thank you for your support which helped to make our inaugural SFRS Women in Fire Service event such a truly memorable experience.

This was a very important event and I look forward to seeing how it grows. Our aim is always to support and encourage people from all backgrounds to consider the fire service as a career choice.

We also extend a special thanks to our speakers who delivered inspiring talks throughout the weekend.
